LETTER: Thumb’s sum more than ed’s

To The Editor:

I have decided Wallowa, Oregon will be my humble abode.

My decision is based on the people who make this their home. My new friends in Wallowa made it very clear to me the importance of keeping it a precious gem on this earth. The people who reside here express the importance of putting God first, and the importance of our youth, presently and in the future. I constantly think, “Wow, how cool would it be to grow up here in this thriving Utopia.”

New to Wallowa, I recently attended a Wallowa City Council meeting, as I am anxious to see how our city leaders manage this town of Wallowa, which I consider a blessing from God.

To my dismay, I was disappointed that the City Council chose to only allocate a meager $100 to the Wallowa School Foundation which supports all aspects of the Wallowa School system ranging from elementary to libraries to FFA.

To make things more absurd, they voted to spend an undecided amount of $3,500 to $4,500 for a Thumb. OK, so what is a Thumb? As I looked about the room, there was a large amount of conversation as to what a Thumb actually is. This included the members of the City Council.

I am not a wealthy person, financially that is. I live on a monthly check of Social Security Disability bestowed upon me because of my Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis.

I am not one to grumble, especially only living here for such a short time. However, being new to this awesome community, and wanting it to continue flourishing, I have decided to match the City Council’s small amount to our youth, and to our leaders of tomorrow.
